The "Bajo-Grande", or large bass is played by plucking or striking the three strings. The strings are made of 1/8" monofilament "wheedwhip" line. The test strength of this material in excess of 800 lbs. The strings are attached at the base with crimped aluminum ferrules and at the top with a locking nut and bolt. Resonance to increase volume is created through the use of three resonating panels, a large circular one at the lower end and two sub-resonators at each side. Required maintenance is simple and requires only two wrenches which loosen the strings for repair and tuning. With heavy use, tuning must be done monthly. Replacement of the strings takes a few minutes and the material is inexpensive.
